Once upon a time...

  • The beginning – in 1967, DAF unveils its first plans for a car factory in Born. In the same year the first cars come off the production line.

  • Volvo acquires a stake in the company – in 1972, Volvo acquires 33% of the shares in the passenger car division of DAF. In 1975, Volvo increases its shareholding to 75% and the company is renamed – Volvo Car B.V.

  • DAF  leaves Born  and Volvo grows – in 1976, Volvo acquires the rest of the shares and a new organization is set up with a head office in Helmond and production in Born.
 
  • Volvo Car Corporation – new reorganizations… a new company name and a cooperation agreement with Renault for the supply of engines.
 
  • Participation of the Dutch State – in 1981, the Dutch State increases its shareholding Volvo Car B.V.

  • Annual production grows to more than 100,000 cars – in 1984, production reaches a record high thanks to the popularity of the Volvo 340 and 360 models.
 
  • A major expansion – the new Paint Shop comes on line in 1984. A high level of automation is introduced in two of the production units: the Body Shop and Final Assembly.

  • New models – in 1985, the Volvo 480 is introduced, followed in 1988-89 by the Volvo 440 and 460 series.

  • The birth of NedCar – following the cooperation agreement reached between Volvo Car Corporation, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation and the Dutch State, which involved an investment of nearly 1.5 billion euros, a new company is born: NedCar.

  • The factory is modernized – NedCar invests in new equipment and other upgrades at the Born factory to enable two car brands to be produced simultaneously.

  • The first Dutch-built Mitsubishi – 1995… the year in which the first Carisma and the Volvo V40 and S40 are introduced.
 
  • More than 200,000 cars are sold – a new milestone in 1997.

  • A new star makes its appearance – in 1998, the Mitsubishi Space Star is introduced.
 
  • Records are broken – in 1999, more than 250,000 cars are produced. The shares in NedCar are divided equally between Mitsubishi and Volvo.
 
  • New shareholder structure – in 2001, Mitsubishi acquires the shares from Volvo and becomes the sole shareholder in NedCar.
 
  • Agreement between MMC and smart – in 2002, Mitsubishi signs an agreement for the production of the smart.

  • Milestones for Born – in 2003, NedCar celebrates the 35th anniversary of the factory in Born. In the same year the factory produces its 4 millionth car.

  • 2004: introduction of new concepts – the smart forfour, the Mitsubishi Colt and the CZ3.

  • 2006: – the production of the smart for four is stopped. NedCar focuses on production of Mitsubishi Colt models CZ3, CZ5 and CZT.
